EMOTION STORM (Tunnemyrsky
in finnish)
SFC's ”Emotion Storm” -project was granted from the Finnish Cultural Foundation and was the first regional applicant in 2009.
The project also got granted for the next year 2010. The Cultural Foundation has supported dozens of ”Storm”-projects around
the country. SFC executes the Emotional Storm -project in two and a half years time in Pori, Ulvila and Noormarkku area.
In addition the activity is about to happen in various different places in Finland.
The first year Emotional Storm took over in four Lehmuskolo's children's home units. Now the project has been brought to
Ulvila, children's home called Ravanikoti, soon followed by a special education class named Porin Pajaluokat. The project is
also about to expand in other places in Finland. Emotional Storm is a pilot for wider action for children in a risk to social and
cultural exclusion. The purpose is to support their inner defragmentation and self-esteem in a ways of cinematic expression.
In Emotional Storm children who are in children's home, custody or foster care are provided the opportunity to make fictional
or documentary short films from their own basis with the guidance of professional artists. The main artist in this project is actor
Jari Forsman. Cinematic production is lead by medianome Emmi Sydänmaa. Film director Noora Männistö and the executive
manager of SFC Yki Räikkälä are also involved in planning the project.
As an art form film making includes different ways of self-expression. It is a good way to perceive the world arounding and to
find a place in it. Self-expression comes concrete with instant peer review. This makes it able to see yourself with other people's
eyes. Cinematic expression is an art therapy form but it is also an efficient way to media educate. A child with a narrow point of
view can learn to see the manipulative side of media. A youngster lost in itself can make progress in finding the self-esteem once lost.
Storm -project organizes a festival for all the participants on the projects. They have chosen a youngster from Lehmuskolo's
children's home unit to be a part of the festival organisation workgroup.
